Suburban Rebels

From Socialist Review, 20th April – 19th May 1982

This is from the monthly magazine of the Socialist Workers Party.
The article looks at punk and oi music as the art school kids have moved on and the lumpen proles have gotten their hands on it. ‘In this punk the idea of fun seems to have been lost, political comment is less of a celebration of the opressed and more and more a moaning about oppression.’ Strange that an apparatchik shouldn’t like it when the workers complain about their lot. Actually come to think of it, they never like it when the masses speak for themselves, in classic SWP speak: ‘It’s part of the downturn.’
