Jilted John

Jilted John did one of the best of the punk singles, and was perhaps the best of the one hit wonders. Any song that has the line ‘I was so upset that I cried all the way to the chip shop’ is okay by me.
I one put on a Jilted John night of poetry where poets read ‘Dear John’ letters that they’d penned for the occaison. The top drawer Laura Anderson from Thee Jezabels sang some heartbreak songs and we played the Jilted John album. I later did a gig with John Shuttleworth, both he and Jilted John are characters created and played by Graham Fellows, and mentioned the gig. He wanted to know what people’s favourite track on the album was? “Fancy Mice”, I told him. He gave a satisfied smile, looked wistfully into the distance and said “It always is” whilst nodding.
Here’re some pics and interviews from 1978.
