John Dowie

John Dowie was an alternative comedian decades before they even existed. He was one of the first acts on Factory Records. In 1978 he contributed three comedic songs to the first Factory music release, A Factory Sample, along with Joy Division, The Durutti Column, and Cabaret Voltaire.
His best remembered song remains the satirical “British Tourist (I Hate the Dutch)” from his debut EP Another Close Shave, issued by Virgin in 1977.

The TV show Revolver rates a mention too. It was the best of the punk shows and a big favourite of my dad, it was deliberately made to be brash and offensive. Cuuuuuuuueeee…
