The Ramones played a benefit for the police on 10 April, 1979 at CBGBs as reported in Melody Maker, 14 July, 1979.
Johnny Ramone told New York magazine 26 March, 2012: “One of the things I am most proud of that we did was a benefit at CBGB for the New York Police Department so they could get bulletproof vests. This was when New York wasn’t safe at all, before Giuliani fixed it up. We even had protesters outside the club, those commies.”
Rock Against The Bronx
Now that Rock Against Racism has an American chapter, all sorts of exciting ideological struggles have begun to surface in New York. Fighting the Ku Klux Klan in the South is one thing, but fingering “racist” rockers in the North is something else. Ramones, for instance, have been playing benefits for the fund to buy bullet-proof vests for policemen. New York RAR have had an instant poster riposte: “Hey Ramones! Why not play benefits to buy bullet-proof vests for the Third World People?”
